attend a&e if…

  • The area around your eye or your neck is swollen

  • Swelling in your mouth or jaw is impeding your ability to breathe, swallow, or speak

 Tips to Ease Toothache

  • Take painkillers, like ibuprofen or paracetamol, or a pain-relieving gel for your mouth - consult a pharmacist if you are unsure

  • Eat soft foods. Try to avoid chewing on the sore tooth and avoid foods that are sweet, very hot, or very cold

  • Avoid smoking - often this will worsen dental problems

  • Keep the affected tooth clean with frequent use of rinses such as hot salt water (1/2 a teaspoon of salt dissolved in a glass of warm water) or Peroxyl mouthwash

  • If you have lost a filling which is causing your toothache or is causing soreness against the soft tissues in your mouth, clean the tooth and place a temporary filling to reduce sharpness
